EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Lycée International de Saint Germain-en-Laye is a French state school. Students are prepared for the baccalaureate with the international option as well as for their sections respective diplomas.

The Lycée International welcomes students from pre-school ("maternelle") to high school ("lycée").

In some Sections, students in Primary and Lower Secondary can attend the Lycée International or a school sharing partnership in sections.

The school only accepts students, of French or foreign nationalities, who master the language of one of the eleven sections. Some sections are divided in different group levels :

. German Section : national teaching and special German
. American Section : national level and American studies
. British Section : mainstream and Group 2
. Danish Section
. Norwegian Section
. Spanish Section
. Italian Section : national teaching and special Italian
. Japanese Section
. Dutch Section : national teaching and special Dutch
. Portuguese Section
. Swedish Section

. Polish Section

The Lycée houses canteen facilities but is not a boarding school. Although there is an important bus network, families are advised to live relatively close to Saint-Germain en Laye.

The decision concerning eligibility for admission is taken by the Head of the Lycée International (Proviseur) on behalf of the Schools Inspector of the Academy of the Yvelines (l’Inspecteur d’Académie des Yvelines) after consultation with the Head of the Section concerned. If necessary, the decision can also be taken upon discussion with the following : Deputy Head ("Proviseur adjoint") of the Lycée International or the Head of the Primary School (Directrice de l’Ecole Primaire).

Decision concerning eligibility for admission to partner schools is made by their respective Heads upon the recommendation of the Head of the Section.

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION

1. Admission to the Lycée depends on the availability of places and the decision is valid only for one year ( Primary, Middle school, or High school). A student may attend one of the partner school, however he will attend the Lycée for his final 3 years (‘seconde’, ‘première’ and ‘terminale’).

Sometimes a decision on admission can only be taken a few days before or after the beginning of the classes, should a place become available. Also, students may be accepted by the school but put on a waiting list pending the availability of places.

2. The Head of Section examines the student’s capacity in the respective language to ensure that he has the required level.

3. The ability to follow the bilingual education is determined, either by examination of the school results, or by a test in certain subjects.

Students who do not speak French may be admitted into a “Français Spécial” class. There is only one Français Spécial class per level, from 2nd grade to 10th grade. After a year (or sometimes less) students are admitted into " regular " class either in the same or the next class level.

4. The needs and motivations of the students and families may also be discussed and considered during interviews with the Section or the Administration of the Lycée.

5. With the family’s agreement, admission may be temporary or submitted to regular examination.

6. Admission is made official once:

- all information relative to the application have been given to the Administration

- administration fees have been paid to the Sections

- the Administration of the Lycée has received the signed document pertaining to Internal Rules and other relevant documents (medical records and school reports).

7. In application of the decree of 10 May 1981, a student’s aptitude for continued presence in an International Section, and therefore in the Lycée International, may be reviewed at the end of the school year by the Class Council (conseil de classe).

SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION

Pre-School (maternelle)

Admission into the Lycée on a full-time basis is only possible once in Kindergarten (at age 5) and upon the condition that the family lives nearby.

Admission as an “externé” is only possible in some Sections and at certain class levels.

Admission to Pre-School does not mean that the student will automatically be accepted to the next class level or even that he will attend the Primary School.

Lower School (école primaire)

Admission is only valid for the Primary School cycle

The student may be admitted

- either at the Lycée International on a full-time basis

- at the Lycée International as an externé. In this case, the child will only attend the Lycée International during his national section’s class periods (two half-days per week). For the rest of the classes, he attends his designated primary school.

. to a partner school of one of the national Sections on a full-time basis : Ecole Henri Dunant and for 2002-2003 Schnapper and Ecole annexe (Saint-Germain-en-Laye) for the American and Spanish Sections, Ecole Félix Eboué (Le Pecq) for the British Section, Ecole Charles Bouvard (Fourqueux) for the German Section, Ecole Normandie Niemen (Le Pecq) for the Portuguese Section.

Middle School (collège)

Admission is only valid for the Lower Secondary school cycle

An opportunity may be given either to attend the Lycée International or one of its partner schools according to criteria determined by each Section :

- for the German, British, Italian and Dutch Sections, the Collège des Hauts Grillets (Saint-Germain-en-Laye)

- for the British and Portuguese Sections, the Collège Pierre et Marie Curie (Le Pecq)

- for the American and Spanish Sections, the Collège Marcel Roby (Saint-Germain en Laye)
- for the Polish Section, the Collège des Hauts Grillets (Saint-Germain-en-Laye).

High School (Lycée)

Classes of the “Second Cycle” (‘Seconde’/10th grade to ‘Terminale’/12th grade) all take place at the Lycée International. These classes are the final run in the Lycée International’s educational system.

Admission into a class of ‘Seconde’ depends on the student’s ability to follow a bilingual and bicultural education up to the Baccalauréat (International Option of the French Baccalauréat). Students coming into the Lycée system may be accepted at the latest in 11th grade as long as they speak French, otherwise students can only be enrolled in ‘Seconde’.

Private Sections

The American, British, Danish, Norwegian, Japanese and Swedish Sections are run by Parents’ Associations under the control of the Proviseur of the Lycée International and the Headmaster of the respective section. The Associations of those Sections charge school fees for the national education. All families must undertake to pay these fees as a prior condition of entry into the Section.

"Français Spécial"

A ‘Français Spécial’ class spends a year at the end of which a decision is taken as to whether or not the student is able to follow normal Frenchclasses. However in Primary, after a year of "Français Spécial", a student may be required to attend the Lycée as an "Externé" student.

ADMISSION FORMALITIES

Generally, recruitments begin on 15 January and admissions begin on September (the beginning of the school year). Admission in the course of the school year is possible, however in exceptional cases.

Families should contact the Administration Department of the Section if possible through an explanatory letter. The Section then sends back all information and documentation necessary to the application. A dated and numbered admission folder should be completed for each child.

These folders should always be completed accurately and legibly, in order to be considered.

- Information concerning civil status (les renseignements d’état civil) of the applicant (first and last names, date and place of birth, gender, nationality) should be written in capital letters, correctly spelt, and should match the information given on the document provided by the family showing the childs identity. Hyphens and spaces should not be omitted in the case of a double name (to be written in the legal order, with the usual name underlined).

- mother tongue (la langue maternelle) is the main language spoken by the child within the family. Should there be other languages used by the child within the family, they should be included under the heading "autres langues familiales" (other languages spoken within the family).

- language of the child’s current educational system (la langue actuelle d’enseignement) is the main language of the childs current educational system (before admission was requested). For example mention French for a French lycée abroad, and American for an American school (in the United States or abroad). Exceptionally, two languages may be mentioned (for education to be considered truly bilingual, there should be a minimum of 40% teaching in one of the languages).

- languages being studied (langues étudiées) including ancient languages, should be mentioned. Take note that the Lycée International gives foreign languages courses in level groups.

- the phrase bilingual language level (niveau bilingue) should be mentioned in the case of courses of a foreign language given by the national education system (for example : a child who has studied Spanish with Spanish children in a French lycée in Spain) without omitting to mention the number of years of study, and the number of hours per week.

- If a child masters another language other then the one spoken in the family, and otherin which he has not received courses and which is not the language spoken in his family, this should be noted in the margin of the folder.

- Under the condition of a sufficient number of students, the following languages are taught at the Lycée International (as well as the national language of the Section) :
. from 6ème (1st modern language or LV1) : English, German, Spanish,

. from 5ème : latin,

. from 4ème : (2nd modern language or LV2) : English, German, Russian, Spanish and Italian,

. from 2nde, it is possible to start Spanish (3rd modern language or LV3).

- requested section (section demandée) : an application may be made to one Section only. Should the family be hesitant about the choice of the section (particularly the Anglophone Sections), please mention it.

- class requested (classe demandée) : this will correspond to the class to which the child should be admitted at the end of the school year in progress. Sections will advise on equivalence of levels in different educational systems and this information will be checked by the Lycée Administration Department which has the final say in the matter. Proof of admission will be required for the levels where it is not automatic. In case of doubt that part of the form should not be completed.

- the Special French class (la classe de français spécial) is a obliged step for all children coming from a non-francophone educational system, except in special cases, a CNED (home study) course for example. Detailed school certificates should be supplied.

- current school (école actuelle) : if possible, information on the current school which the child is attending should be mentioned.

- the family (la famille) : to be completed with care. Ifthe heading "tutor or correspondant" is not applicable, delete it. The address of the family in France may temporarily be that of a correspondant or a company forwarding correspondance.

- brothers and sisters (frères et soeurs) : this information must be included, especially where several applications are being made in which case one application folder should be completed per child. Children are considered for admission individually and the admission of a child into the school does not guarantee places for his brothers and sisters.

- documentation to be included (pièces jointes) :

school reports : it is important that school reports of the previous school years and the last school report of the actual school be attached to the application forms. In some cases some sections request a recommendation letter from the school or from a teacher. One should send further school reports as you receive them, quoting the reference given on your application folder.

Photocopies of the original reports are accepted. One may include an extra information explaining the method used.

documentation showing the applicant’s identity : if possible, this document would include the whole family’s identity (details of the surnames, official first names, date and place of birth, nationality and the reason for the child having that nationality, nationality of parents etc..).

results of exams or language certificates : you may include any document showing the childs ability to master the language of the requested section (for example, samples of work written in that language). However this does not exempt the child from an entry test.

letter stating application motives : this document, which you may draw up after reading this leaflet, is extremely important. One should mention and clearly explain all the reasons for applying (especially if they are personal, family, pedagogical or relative to orientation).

other documents: information concerning the child’s actual school, a presentation letter, certificates and awards, sports, theatre, musical instrument, social activities, etc...

other information : of medical nature, or of former assistance in the school. Certain medical documents and proof of vaccinations may be requested upon admission by the school of the child. Further information on this point may be obtained from the Section or from the Medical Service.
